New Musing: Dreamer Boy

Let us rejoice and give thanks to the wonder that is the Spotify algorithms (all together now).

It’s been approximately 24 hours since Spotify shuffle blessed me with the true musical gem that is Dreamer Boy. And believe me when I say, I have been listening to his tunes NON STOP after stumbling upon them.

Dreamer Boy is the project of Nashville-based artist Zach Taylor. As the name suggests, his music is quite literally dreamy. It feels laid-back, nonchalant and effortless; reminiscent of artists like Easy Life or Rex Orange County, but with the pop anthem vibes of Troye Sivan.

The 24-year-old describes his sound as cowboy pop (minus the standoffs). This definitely comes through in his latest single Puppy Dog, which features some beautiful chord progressions and grooves. Also the music video is great.

Whilst Dreamer Boy brings this beachy, relaxed vibe, his lyrics go deeper, as seen throughout his debut album Love, Nostalgia. This was released in 2018, produced with roommate Bobby Knepper.

My favourite tunes on this body of work include Passport (with its beautiful, dulcet vocals), Lavender, Bluff, Simple (featuring some stunning opening synths and strings), and Falling for the Wrong One. I recognise that this is basically the whole album, but humour me.

Dreamer Boy has toured with a bunch of cool artists like Still Woozy, Omar Apollo and Clairo. He’s currently working on a new album: All The Ways We Are Together, which is due to be released this year.
